Savannah, GA

After Outer Banks, we made an overnight stop in Raleigh, NC on the way to Savannah, GA. Savannah has a very historical feel to it. I really enjoyed walking around the Savannah historical district, looking at the homes and walking along the riverfront as well through the many squares and parks in the city. I loved that there was live oak and Spanish moss everywhere.

We started our day with lunch at Zunzi’s. It is a small sandwich shop with no indoor seating, so while standing in line, we got caught in a raining downpour. The food was worth the rain and wait. We got the Conquistador (baked chicken breast sandwich with special sauce) and the Godfather (the Conquistador with marinara sauce and your choice of sausage).


Due to the downpour and lightning, our plan of doing a walking tour was cancelled. Instead, we did a trolley tour with Old Savannah Tours. The tour gave a nice overview of Savannah history and pointed out various historical sites. One of the sites was the Chippewa Square, where the bench in the Forrest Gump movie was placed for filming. The bench is now kept in a museum.



In addition to day tour options, night ghost tours are quite popular in Savannah. You can even stay in haunted hotels if you want to.

For dinner, we ate at the Olde Pink House, an 18th century mansion. There are three dining floors, including a tavern on the bottom floor. Each dining room is decorated differently. We tried the pecan crusted chicken breast with blackberry bourbon glaze as well as the crispy scored flounder with apricot shallot sauce. These dishes came with sides of sweet potato, creamy grits, and collards.




We took a post-dinner walk along River Street, watching the cargo ships come by. One of my favorite shops was the Savannah Bee Company, selling a variety of products made from local honey. There are two candy stores at the riverfront, River Street Sweets and Savannah Candy Kitchen, where you can sample pralines and salt water taffy.  For dessert, we had ice cream from Leopold’s.




The next morning, we took a walk through Forsyth Park and then lined up at 10am for lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, which is only open from 11am – 2pm on the weekdays. This was a unique dining experience. We sat at a dining table with strangers, but eating family style Southern food. It was fun to hear everyone’s stories and everyone agreed that the food was delicious. There were 20 plus dishes (mac n cheese, beef stew, rice & gravy, mashed potatoes, baked beans, candied yams, potato salad just to name a few). The real star of the meal was the fried chicken. We ended the meal with peach cobbler and banana bread pudding.




IMG_3367If we had more time in Savannah, we would have visited Bonaventure Cemetery.
