We went to our first horse races ever at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club down in San Diego. If you fancy, you can wear a big hat, but most people dressed relatively casual. JC and I went for sundresses and wedges.
Before arriving in Del Mar, we stopped at Pizza Port in Solana Beach. We chose half BBQ Chicken Pizza and half Pizza Carlsbad.
The day we went also happened to be the Saturday for the beer fest, which featured top-rated San Diego beers. You could purchase wristbands to sample 5 beers.
The rules for betting seem rather complicated because there are so many different kinds of bets that can be placed. We followed the simple bet found here. There were machines available to place bets, but since it was our first time, we decided to wait in line to place our bets with an actual person.
Beginner’s luck was definitely on my side. In the first race I placed a bet on, the horse I picked won!
For dinner, we headed to Searsucker, a restaurant by Top Chef Brian Malarkey, in downtown San Diego. We ordered mostly small plates to share. We got the heirloom + prosciutto + burrata + fennel, crab cake, egg + bacon “pork belly”, marrow bone + sea salt + onion jam, and duck fat fries. We also shared the tuna entree. The pork belly was my favorite dish.
We saved room for dessert because we knew we were going to Extraordinary Desserts. Unfortunately, they were out of the Passion Fruit Ricotta, so I chose the White Chocolate Linzer Torte and JC got the Tres Leche.
