Cheese Fondue

During the colder months, fondue is a fun option for a meal at home with some great company.

I have been using a Three Cheese Fondue Recipe found here. This recipe serves about 5 people.


  • 1 cup of white wine
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
  • 7 ounces of Gruyere cheese
  • 7 ounces of sharp Cheddar
  • 7 ounces of Emmentaler (Swiss) cheese

Note: For a more traditional recipe, add less Cheddar cheese and more Gruyere and Swiss cheese.

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cook Time: 20 mins


  1. Cut the three cheeses into cubes.
  2. Bring the wine to a boil in a small pan.
  3. In a separate pot, melt the butter over medium low heat. Whisk in the flour and stir constantly for about 5 minutes.
  4. Slowly stir in the wine with the flour mixture
  5. Slowly add the cubes of cheese and constantly stir the cheese to avoid sticking and burning.
  6. Transfer the melted cheese to the fondue pot.

A note of caution – the cheese should be kept on a low heat and stirred constantly until it is transferred to the fondue pot. I once made the mistake of turning off the heat because I was waiting for the guests to arrive and then turning the heat back on when it was dinner time. The consistency of the cheese mixture when I tried to re-melt the cheese was no longer smooth.



Here are some ideas for cheese fonude dippers:

  • Cubes of french bread
  • Lightly steamed broccoli and carrots
  • Steam baby potatoes
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Slices of red apple

Gather your family and friends around the fondue pot and enjoy the food and conversations! Next time I’m going to try this more traditional cheese fondue recipe.
